Zionism,
a name given to a scheme for the acquisition of Palestine by purchase from Turkey, with a view to
establishing the Jews in the Holy Land.
Zionism has made great progress, and is championed by
some of the greatest living Jews.
While its aim is to populate Palestine with Jews, and provide a refuge
there for some of the persecuted Jewish millions of Russia, Rumania, etc., it is not averse to Jewish settlement
in other desirable localities, and a suggestion from the Federation of American Zionists through Jacob H. Schiff
(q.v.) in Dec. 1906,
for a settlement near Galveston, Texas,
was regarded favorably by Zionist leaders.
